Cougars Hit the Pool at WSC Pentathlon

VENTURA, CALIF. — College of the Canyons swim & dive hit the water for its first meet of the season at the annual Western State Conference (WSC) Pentathlon hosted by Ventura College.

COC's men's squad finished fourth overall among the 10 schools that competed. The Canyons women's team only entered two swimmers into the event and did not factor into the team competition. 

Sophomore Rowdy Feather was the Cougars' top overall finisher with 56 event points. He swam to a seventh-place finish in the 100-yard butterfly (56.80) and a sixth place result in both the 100-yard backstroke (57.77) and 100-yard IM (58.99). Elsewhere, Feather took seventh in the 100-yard backstroke (1:07.22) and 11th in the 100-yard freestyle (51.83).

Freshman Emilio Santoyo also had a strong day for the Cougars. Santoyo finished fifth in both the 100-yard butterfly (56.09) and 100-yard breaststroke (57.04), and also took seventh in the 100-yard IM (59.95). He recorded 40 event points on the day.

Miguel Martinez also scored well with a sixth-place result in the 100-yard butterfly (56.30) before taking ninth in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:07.36). That resulted in 22 points for Canyons.

COC (119) trailed host Ventura (143) in third place, runner up L.A. Pierce (157) and event winner Santa Monica (190).

On the women's side Kaley Gregory was the top finisher for COC. She swam to a time of 1:13.41 in the 100-yard backstroke to finish 16th, then took 21st in the 100-yard breaststroke at 1:22.50. 

Cuesta College and Santa Monica tied for the lead in the women's event with 137 points. Santa Barbara (128) and Bakersfield (122) followed to round out the top four.

Canyons will next hit the deck at the three-day Mt. SAC Invitational running Feb. 21-23 in Walnut.
