College of the Canyons women's tennis will compete at the Western State Conference (WSC) Women's Tennis Singles & Doubles Championships beginning Friday, April 5 at Ventura College.
COC (9-7, 9-5) finished the regular season third in the team conference standings behind champions Santa Barbara City College (16-3, 14-0) and runner-up Bakersfield College (17-4, 12-2).
Canyons will now have five players compete in the 64-player singles tourney, with freshmen Una Stanisavljevic and Nicole Villarta joined by sophomore Marisa Wambolt in competing as ranked players. Ranked players automatically receive a first round bye and will move on to the round of 32.
Stanisavljevic is the tourney's No. 2 singles player, Wambolt is No. 13 and Villarta is No. 14. COC players Celeste Hernandez and Calista Lian are competing in the tournament unranked and will begin play during Friday's round of 64.
Singles competitors will play down to a final 16 on Friday, with action then continuing on Saturday until the field has been narrowed down to four. The final four will then compete for the singles conference championship on Friday, April 12.
Doubles competition begins with a round of 32 pairings, with ranked teams automatically moving on to the round of 16.
COC will feature three doubles teams in the event. The combination of Stanisavljevic and Seleste Sakato in ranked No. 4 and the team of Wambolt/Villarta is No. 9. Also competing for the Lady Cougars is the team of Hernandez/Lian.
Similar to the singles tourney, competition begins on Friday and continues Saturday until four teams emerge. The doubles conference title will then be decided on April 12.
The top 15 players/teams from both the singles and doubles tournament will also qualify to compete at the CCCAA State Championship in Ojai from April 25-28.
