The College of the Canyons women's tennis team started the 2020 season with a convincing 9-0 home victory over College of the Sequoias, marking the first season-opening victory in the program's brief three-year history.
Canyons, which launched its program in spring 2018, was aided by a pair of forfeitures from the COS squad, but was otherwise in control for each of the five singles and two doubles victories.
On the singles side No. 1 player Stanisavljevic, who was an All-Western State Conference Second-Team selection in 2019, won her match with a 6-2, 6-3 final result.
Villarta, who earned an All-WSC nod for her doubles play in 2019, followed along the same vein with a 6-3, 6-3 victory.
COC newcomers Taylor Cohen, Mary MacAdam and Jennifer Russell all found victory in their first appearance with the Lady Cougars. Freshman Jaclyn Wosk was also scheduled to compete, but ended up winning her match by way of forfeit due to a lack of players on the COS side.
Canyons will feature a roster of 11, mostly local, players for the 2020 season, with all but two having attended Santa Clarita area high schools.
COC head coach Patty LaBat and the Lady Cougars are back in action vs. Rio Hondo College on Thursday, Jan. 30.
