The College of the Canyons women's tennis program has been recognized as an Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Junior College All-Academic Team, with eight individual student-athletes also taking home Scholar Athlete awards.
Canyons is one of just 17 two-year programs from across the nation to earn am ITA All-Academic Team designation, which requires a combined team GPA of 3.2 for the 2019-20 academic year.
COC posted a team GPA of 3.62 to be included in the group of eight California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) schools recognized as an All-Academic Team. Canyons was also one of just two programs from the Western State Conference (WSC) to earn such honors.
ITA Scholar Athlete awards, which require an individual GPA of 3.5 or higher, were presented to 87 junior college student-athletes across the nation.
Representing Canyons as Scholar Athlete award winners are graduating sophomores Celeste Hernandez and Una Stanisavljevic and freshmen Taylor Cohen, Lauren Hannah, Mary MacAdam, Alexis Mirzayan, Jennifer Russell and Jaclyn Wosk.
"Congratulations to all of our student-athletes who worked so hard in achieving these awards," said Canyons women's tennis head coach Patty LaBat. "I am so proud of each and every one of them."
In just the program's third season of existence, COC stormed out to an impressive 9-2 team record before having the 2020 season end with back-to-back rain outs and the eventual cancellation of all contests due to the COVID-19 crisis.
Featuring a starting lineup made up of all SCV-area student-athletes, Canyons notched a six-match win streak to start the season culminating with a home conference win vs. Ventura College on Feb. 11. Additionally, COC was a flawless 4-0 vs. road opponents.
Individually, MacAdam was a perfect 11-0 in singles competition while Russell went 10-1 on the shortened season. Sophomore Nicole Villarta and Cohen combined to go 7-2 in doubles play.
