Leah Gillie & Luis Rodriguez Named Jersey Mike’s Student-Athletes of the Week

College of the Canyons student-athletes Leah Gillie (women's volleyball) and Luis Rodriguez (football) have been named the Jersey Mike's COC Athletic Department's Women's & Men's Student-Athletes of the Week for the period running Sept. 9-14. Gillie and Rodriguez are the third set of honorees for the fall 2024 semester.

Gillie put together back-to-back standout performances during the Cougars' two-match outing at the annual El Camino College Tri-tourney on Sept. 11.

The sophomore middle blocker out of Quartz Hill High School finished the first match vs. state ranked Grossmont College with 12 kills on 18 attacks for a .611 hitting percentage. Gillie also served up a pair of aces alongside three digs and five block assists.

In the second match of the day, it was Gillie leading the way once again with seven kills, a .429 hitting percentage two more aces and five more block assists in what was a 3-0 (25-22, 25-19, 25-22) victory over host El Camino College.

Later in the week Canyons played to a 3-0 (25-18, 26-24, 25-20) victory over visiting Mt. San Jacinto College.

COC is back in the Cougar Cage Friday, Sept. 20 vs. Moorpark College.

Luis Rodriguez / Football

Rodriguez had a big night in the Cougars 29-13 win at No. 5 Fullerton College on Saturday, Sept. 14.

He finished the game a perfect 5-of-5 on field goals (36, 32, 37, 27, 42) with four coming in the first half. Rodriguez' final attempt in the fourth quarter went for a long of 42 and capped the road victory for COC.  

The freshman out of Verdugo Hills High School also converted on both PATs and handled kickoff duties with eight kicks for 453 yards for an average of 56.6 per, with one touchback.

Up next, the No. 14 state ranked Cougars remain on the road at No. 24 Palomar College for a scheduled 2 p.m. kickoff Saturday, Sept. 21.
