By Jesse Muñoz/COC Sports Information Director
College of the Canyons student-athletes Hazel Rhodes (women's track & field) and Liam Ostrom (baseball) have been named the Jersey Mike's COC Athletic Department's Women's & Men's Student-Athletes of the Week for the period running March 9-14. Rhodes and Ostrom are the eighth set of honorees for the 2026 winter/spring period.
Hazel Rhodes / Women's Track & Field
Rhodes turned heads with her winning run during the annual Ben Brown Invitational hosted by California State. University, Fullerton on March 13.
The Saugus High School alum bested competitors from UNLV, UC Irvine, CSUN and UC San Diego to take the top spot in the 400m event with a school-record time of 53.99. That time also qualifies as the state-leading mark among 3C2A runners to this point of the season.
The sophomore was later part of the Cougars' 4x400 relay team that narrowly missed setting a school record with its time of 3:54.52. That team consisted of Monique Fulling, Syrai Piper, and Amara Shields with Rhodes in the final position. That same lineup also placed seventh in the 4x100 relay at a pace of 48.15, with Rhodes again running in the anchor position.
Rhodes is the defending 3C2A state champion in the 400m, having also won the 2025 Western State Conference (WSC) title in the same event.
Liam Ostrom / Baseball
Ostrom clubbed a two-run, walk-off home run to power the Cougars past Glendale College in a dramatic 17-16 victory at Mike Gillespie Field on March 10.
The round-tripper was Ostrom's eighth of the year, which leads the club and ranks second in the conference. He finished the game 2-for-4 with two walks, two runs and the game-winning knock.
Two days later, the freshman from Ridgefield, Washington went 3-for-4, with a walk, run and two RBIs. His two-run double in the ninth inning got COC back in the game in what was an eventual 9-6 road loss.
Ostrom added another walk in the series finale vs. Glendale, eventually finishing the week 5-for-11 with a home run, double, four walks, three runs and four RBIs.
