LANCASTER — College of the Canyons picked up its first win in Western State Conference (WSC), South Division play on Saturday night with a 76-70 road victory over Antelope Valley College, snapping a three-game losing streak.
Antelope Valley (6-12, 0-4) maintained the lead the majority of the first half, but the Cougars trailed closely, never letting the Marauders get more than five points ahead.
Canyons (10-8, 1-3) finally saw its persistence pay off in the final three minutes of the opening half, taking a 31-26 lead into halftime.
The Cougars maintained the same energy into the second half, continuing to put down points and forcing the Marauders to play from behind, in what was still a close contest.
The Cougars had built a comfortable 11-point lead midway through the second half before AVC rallied back to take a 51-50 lead with seven minutes to go in the game.
During those final seven minutes, COC sophomore Dylan Griffin came alive off the bench netting a critical ten points to push the Cougars to victory.
Griffin finished the game with 12 points in his 24 minutes of work, going 2-of-4 from the field and 6-of-6 from the free throw line.
Canyons saw five different Cougars in the double digits and shot 40 percent as a team. Having given up 22 turn-overs to the Marauder's 17, the Cougars kept AVC at bay with fewer fouls committed.

Upcoming Schedule
Canyons has one more away game on Wednesday, Jan. 18 at 7 p.m. against West Los Angeles College, before returning home to the Cougar Cage.
On Saturday Jan. 21 the Cougars will play in a 5 p.m. tip-off against Glendale College. That game will broadcast to fans free of charge via YouTube on the Cougars Sports Network.
COC then hits the road for its next two games against Santa Monica College and L.A. Valley College on Jan. 25 and 28, respectively.
