Canyons Claims Key Conference Victory 91-83 Over Glendale

College of the Canyons held strong for a 91-83 home win over Glendale College at Lee Smelser Court on Wednesday, with the victory propelling the Cougars toward the top of the conference standings.
Canyons (15-8, 6-3) moved into a three-way tie for second in the Western State Conference (WSC), South Division standings with the win, its fifth in the last six games. The Cougars sweep the season series from Glendale (7-16, 2-7) after having also downed the Vaqueros on the road back on Jan. 10.
Dwayne Boston Jr. led Canyons with 20 points and Julius Washington was next with 16.
Craig Irons continued to play well for the Cougars with 15 points on a 7-of-10 shooting night in the paint. He also led the way with a game-high 12 rebounds. Thomas Pickens was the fourth to reach double digits with 12 points.
COC was able to withstand a number of strong pushes from the Vaqueros, who never led in the second half, but continued to fight back from several double-digit deficits.
Glendale outscored Canyons 46-45 down the stretch and shot better than 53 percent in the second half. Team scoring leader Omree Bentov scored 24 points in the losing effort.
Canyons next travels to face conference leader Citrus College (22-1, 9-0) at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 7.
Conference play then continues back at the Cougar Cage on Wednesday, Feb. 11, with a home tilt vs. L.A, Valley College at 5 p.m. That game will be broadcast to fans free of charge via YouTube on the Cougars Sports Network.
