Cougars Finish Second at Sandpiper Golf Club

SANTA BARBARA — College of the Canyons finished runner-up for the second time this season after going neck and neck with host Santa Barbara City College and eventually seeing a 'card off' determine the Vaqueros as the victors at Sandpiper Golf Club.

Playing under mostly cloudy but clear conditions, both teams finished with a five-player score of 388, however SBCC won the 'card off' due to having a lower score turned in by its No. 6 player.  

Ventura College settled in the third (397) while Glendale stood behind the Pirates in fourth (400). Citrus College was a few strokes behind in fifth (406), followed by Bakersfield (411), then Allan Hancock (440) and finally Antelope Valley College (442).

SBCC's Ryan Gay earned medalist honors four strokes ahead of COC's Dom De Luca and Paul Grimonpon, who both finished in a tie for second place with rounds of 76. 

Canyons sophomore Kieran Bye was just a stroke behind at 77 to tie for fifth place, while teammate Alexander Moores finished a stroke behind him with his round of 78. 

Ben Stewart brought in a round of 81 for the Cougars and Xander Artois' round of 84 was the sixth score. SBCC's sixth man, Michael Gentry, carded a score of 82. 

Monday's round at Sandpiper had originally been scheduled for Feb. 20, but had to be postponed due to weather.

The Cougars are set to tee off again Monday, April 24 for the Western State Conference Championships hosted by Ventura at the Las Posas Country Club in Camarillo.

The 36-hole conference tourney is set to kick off at 7 a.m.
