College of the Canyons recorded a pair of lopsided victories over Santiago Canyon College on Friday at Whitten Field, as sophomore Akane Gonzalez led the way from the circle.
Canyons (7-1) won its fifth straight game and reached double-digit run totals for the fourth time in that span. COC outscored Santiago Canyon 18-1 on the day with a 5-0 victory coming in game one, followed by a shortened 13-1 affair in the second game that was called after five innings.
Gonzalez earned wins in both contests improving her record to 5-1 on the season. In the opener, she tossed seven innings allowing just four hits and a pair of walks.
Jordan Shepheard's two-run double in the first put Canyons on top 2-0. The Cougars then pushed across an unearned run in the third before Giselle Merida's RBI groundout made it a 4-0 ballgame. Merida later scored a run in the fifth for the 5-0 final.
Gonzalez went back to work in game two and promptly received eight runs of support in the home half of the first inning. Canyons banged out six hits in the inning including extra-base efforts from Jeniece Jimenez and Krista Viereck.
Jeniece Jimenez finished 3-for-4 with a run and RBI in the game. Viereck finished with a pair of walks, two RBIs and two runs.
The early 8-0 lead proved more than enough as Gonzalez again limited the SCC lineup to no runs on four hits while issuing three walks.
The Cougars added four more in the fourth highlighted by Jocelyn Jimenez' two-run single. The freshman later came around to score on a wild pitch to end the scoring.
Santiago Canyon (4-6) managed to plate a run in the fifth, after Gonzalez had exited the game, for the 13-1 final.
Canyons will next host Santa Barbara City College (1-6) in a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday, Feb. 10. Games are scheduled for noon and 2 p.m.
