Canyons Clobbers Glendale in 15-7 Comeback Win

College of the Canyons posted a 15-7 run-shortened victory over visiting Glendale College on Thursday after coming back from an early four-run deficit.
The 15 runs scored by Canyons (15-11, 2-2) represents the third-highest total of the season. The run-shortened victory was the ninth of the season for the Cougars.
Glendale (16-9, 0-4) scored four runs in the first and two more in the second to build a 6-2 advantage before the Cougars regained control with 10 runs in the bottom of that inning.
Belinda Lujano's two-run double started the scoring frenzy that resulted in 10 runs on seven hits. Jocelyn Jimenez, Jeniece Jimenez, Amber Phillips and Yahali Gonzalez all added RBIs in the inning.
Lujano helped bring in two more runs in the fourth when she singled and then found herself in a run-down that resulted in two more runners coming in to make it a 14-6 COC lead.
Jordan Shepherd's RBI double in the bottom of the fifth ended the game at 15-7 for the host Cougars.
Yahali Gonzalez was 3-for-3 with triple, three runs and two RBIs to lead the Cougars at the plate. Jeniece Jimenez finished 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI and also stole two bases.
In all, Canyons swiped seven bases in the game with Jocelyn Jimenez finishing with three steals.
COC sophomore Akane Gonzalez pitched the first two and 2/3 innings allowing six runs, but just two earned, on seven hits and a walk. She struck out three before handing the ball to Anais Perez in relief with two outs in the third.
Perez (9-8) would go on to earn the win with her two and 1/3 innings of relief work. She allowed one run on one hit and a walk.
Annaliese Ruiz (4-4) took the loss for Glendale after allowing 12 runs, 10 earned, in her one and 2/3 innings. The Vaqueros had three players record multi-hit efforts, including Ruiz.
Canyons has won back-to-back contests but remains 2.5 games behind conference leader Citrus College (20-8, 5-0) in the Western State Conference (WSC), South Division standings. Antelope Valley (19-7, 4-0) and Bakersfield College (13-15, 4-2) are also near the top of the division.
The Cougars next travel to face L.A. Valley at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 24.
