SANTA MARIA — No. 7 College of the Canyons remained unbeaten after its road trip to Allan Hancock College on Friday, with the Cougars posting a third straight shutout to win 4-0 over the Bulldogs.
Canyons (5-0) entered the match as the No. 7 ranked team in the state according to the first California Community College Sports Information Association (CCCSIA) poll released Sept. 16. The Cougars also sit at No. 15 in the United Soccer Coaches national junior college DIII rankings.
COC freshman Leila Sadra opened the scoring in the 10th minute when her free kick attempt was able to beat the AHC goalkeeper.
Four minutes later it was Sadra again, this time taking a touch from Lily Golphenee to put the Cougars ahead at 2-0. The score was Sadra's fourth of the season, with three coming in the last two matches.
Sadra remained active and on the attack, later sending a ball to Gisele Saravia who scored in the 36th minute, her first of the season, to put Canyons in full control at 3-0.
In the second half it was Lily Golphenee adding an exclamation mark with her third goal of the year coming unassisted in the 70th minute.
The COC backline combined to limit Allan Hancock (1-3-4) to just one shot in the game.
Canyons freshman goalkeeper Rebecca Ferguson (5-0) earned the clean sheet, her second of the week and third straight during the win streak.
The Cougars earned three corner kicks and were credited with 13 shots in the match.
COC will play a final non-conference match at Santa Barbara City College (5-3) at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 23. The Vaqueros will enter on a three-game streak of their own.
