No. 6 College of the Canyons trailed at the break but battled back to salvage a 1-1 draw vs. conference opponent L.A. Valley College in front of its home crowd on Friday night.
The draw was the first of the season for Canyons (11-1-1, 5-1-1) with the Cougars' need to play catch up placing them in unfamiliar territory.
L.A. Valley (7-7-1, 2-4-1) managed to get one past COC goalkeeper Rebecca Ferguson in the 29th minute to move ahead near the midway point of the opening half. Haley Mallas was marked for the goal with an assist from Hazel Caro.
Ferguson (11-1-1) handled five saves in the match to help Canyons hold on to the top spot in the Western State Conference (WSC), South Division standings.
COC sophomore scoring leader Bailey Williamson put away her seventh goal in the 55th minute to give her side the equalizer. Williamson continues to perform at a high level with 21 points (seven goals/seven assists) thus far.
With 16 total shots in the match, Canyons had a handful of scoring opportunities down the stretch but was forced to settle for the draw. LAVC goalkeeper Nina Diaz recorded nine saves to help keep the Cougars out of the win column.
Canyons remains home to take on Glendale College at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 21. That contest will be livestreamed to fans free of charge via YouTube on the Cougar Sports Network.
