Women's Tennis Program Hosts First Match of Inaugural Season

College of the Canyons hosted its first women's tennis match in school history, with head coach Patty LaBat and the Cougars taking the court vs. defending state champion Orange Coast College in a historic day for the COC Athletic Department.
The all-freshman Canyons squad lost the match 9-0 in front of a crowd of more than 50 students, staff members and tennis supporters who were on hand to witness the first outing in the Cougars' inaugural season.
Marisa Wambolt and Leilani Figalan each won four games in their matchups to lead Canyons in singles competition.
Meanwhile, the duo of Figalan and Jenny Cranert won a game in doubles competition, before eventually falling 8-1.
"We got beat really bad that first time out, but Orange Coast is the top of the top in California," said LaBat. "I can see the potential in our girls though."

1. Figalan/Cranert (COC) lost to Taylor/Le Boulenge (OCC) — 8-1
2. Wambolt/Best (COC) lost to Boettcher/Newhall (OCC) — 8-0
3. Cherokee Thurston/Heaven French (COC) lost to Demi Dang/Abby Welcom (OCC) — 8-0
The Cougars will play a total of 16 matches in 2018, including Friday's non-conference event vs. Orange Coast.
Canyons will return to action vs. College of the Sequoias on Saturday, Feb. 3, before hosting conference opponent Antelope Valley College at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 6.
