Cougars Win Third Straight in 5-4 Result at Glendale

GLENDALE — College of the Canyons won a third straight conference match with a narrow 5-4 victory over host Glendale College on Thursday.

Canyons (8-4, 7-3) was the beneficiary of a pair of forfeited points, one in singles play and another in doubles, in winning the match. The victory was second this week and third consecutive dating back to March 5. COC previously defeated Antelope Valley College earlier in the week.

The Cougars won a point with the pairing of Emma Chodur/Baylee Renfro in the No. 1 doubles position.

COC's singles wins came from Chodur in the No. 1 spot and Nadia Godoy-Ortega as the No. 5 singles player.

Chodur remains undefeated on the year and improved her singles mark to 12-0. Godoy-Ortega improved to 4-8 and has now won back-to-back singles matches.

Glendale (5-7, 4-4) won matches in the No. 2, 3 and 4 matchups. The short-handed Vaqueros also took a point in the No. 2 doubles match.

COC now enters the weekend as the third-place team in the Western State Conference (WSC) standings. L.A. Mission (15-0, 9-0) holds the top spot ahead of Santa Barbara City College (10-1, 6-1). 

The Cougars are currently the No. 7 ranked team in Southern California according to the current Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) ratings. Chodur is the No .1 ranked singles player in the region.

Canyons next hosts conference opponent Santa Monica College (3-8, 2-7) on Friday, March 13, at the Cougar Courts. First serve is scheduled for 2 p.m. in a match that was postponed from Feb. 17, due to inclement weather.

  2.  Baylee Renfro (COC) loses to Roxanna Tahani-Bidmeshki (GCC) — 6-7 (9), 4-6
  3.  Breana Lemos (COC) loses to Jamielyn Diaz (GCC) — 1-6, 1-6
  4.  Lauren Neal (COC) loses to Skylar Sabetta (GCC) — 3-6, 7-6 (3), 2-6
  5.  Nadia Godoy-Ortega (COC) defeats Eve Kim-Brody (GCC) — 6-4, 7-5
  6. COC wins point by forfeit.
