College of the Canyons matched a program-best six-match win streak on Thursday with a 5-4 victory over visiting Ventura College on 'Sophomore Day' at the Cougar Courts.
Canyons (11-4, 10-3) won two doubles matches before taking a trio of singles victories to get past Ventura (8-7, 6-7) and sweep the season series over the Pirates.
COC freshman Emma Chodur moved to 15-0 in singles play with a straight sets victory as the No. 1 singles player.
Chodur also teamed with sophomore Baylee Renfro as the No. 1 doubles duo, with that pairing improving to 12-3 on the year following its 12th straight doubles win.
Renfro also won in singles play taking a point in No. 2 singles action. Renfro found victory for the third straight outing and now sits at 7-8 in singles play for the year.
Lauren Neal and Breana Lemos teamed for an exciting 8-6 come-from-behind victory in No. 2 doubles play. Neal, who made a number of key plays in the front court during the comeback bid, suffered an injury in the match and was later scratched from singles play.
Cougars' freshman Olivia Snyder claimed the decisive point during the No. 6 singles match with a three-set victory to help seal the win. Snyder improved to 5-7 on the season.
The six consecutive team wins by the Cougars equals the six-match win streaks established by both the 2020 and 2024 squads.
In 2020, COC won its first six matches to begin the season enroute to a 9-2 overall record before seeing its season come to a halt due to cancellations brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic. Four years later it was Canyons once again starting the season 6-0 before an early-season non-conference loss to American River College, the eventual 2024 3C2A State Champions.
A COC win at Santa Barbara City College in the conference finale at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 24, would establish a new program record for the Cougars.
Canyons is scheduled to close out the regular season in a match vs. four-year program Occidental College at 4 p.m. Wednesday, March 25.
The Western State Conference (WSC) Singles & Doubles Championships begin Wednesday, April 1, with that four-day tournament running through April 4.
The Cougars are also expected to receive a bid to the 3C2A Southern California Regional Playoffs beginning in early April.
