VENTURA — College of the Canyons played at day one of the annual Western State Conference (WSC) Singles & Doubles Championships hosted by Ventura College on Tuesday, with the Cougars seeing a trio of players advance to Thursday's third round matches.
Canyons saw all six of its singles players entered in the round of 64 with No. 1 position Emma Chodur and No. 2 player Baylee Renfro both earning opening round byes based on their performances through the regular season.
Chodur was the tourney's overall No. 1 seed after completing the regular season undefeated against community college competition at a record of 15-0. Following her first-round bye, Chodur was able to easily defeat Franziska Stockman of Santa Barbara City College in straight sets (6-1, 6-1).
Renfro who entered as the No. 11 seed, followed the same path advancing past the first round by virtue of a bye, then defeating No. 21 seed Dulce Contreras of Ventura College in another straight sets victory (6-3, 6-1).
Breana Lemos, the tourney's No. 22 seed, was forced to play a single eight-game set in the opening round but also emerged victorious. Lemos logged a decisive 8-2 victory over Janaya Medina of Antelope Valley College in the opener but didn't fare as well in the following round with the freshman falling to No. 15 America Fragoso of L.A. Mission (0-6, 3-6).
Lemos will move on, however, with her opening-round win earning the freshman a spot in the tourney's back draw bracket.
COC sophomores Lauren Neal and Nadia Godoy-Ortega and freshman Olivia Snyder each lost their opening-round matches.
Neal fell to No. 24 Ariana Valiente of Antelope Valley (4-8). Godoy-Ortega lost to McCarley Trigg (2-8) of Santa Barbara City. Snyder was defeated by No. 23 Sarah Ashby of Santa Monica College (3-8).
Tournament action continues Thursday, April 2, with the conclusion of singles competition in the morning ahead of the doubles tourney later in the afternoon.
Chodur faces Alitzel Partida of L.A. Mission College in the Round of 16 at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday. Renfro is set to take on No. 6 Alice Guillaumond of Santa Barbara City College at the same time. Lemos will compete in the back draw beginning at 11:30 a.m.
Chodur/Renfro will also team for doubles action beginning at 3:30 p.m. having already earned a first round bye based on the duo's regular season performance.
The pairings of Neal/Lemos and Godoy-Ortega/Snyder will begin opening-round doubles action at 1:30 p.m.
The conference tourney is slated to run through Saturday, April 4. The Cougars should also learn their postseason fate that day, with COC expected to advance to compete as a team in the 3C2A Southern California Regional Playoffs.
