RIVERSIDE — No. 4 College of the Canyons played to a 5-3 road victory over No. 5 Riverside City College in the opening round of the 3C2A Southern California Regional Playoffs on April 7.
The playoff win by the Cougars is the first in team history after only establishing the program in 2018. Canyons also advanced to the Southern California regionals in 2022 and 2024. The victory over the Tigers avenges COC's playoff losst at Riverside in 2024.
The Cougars (12-6) won two points in doubles competition with Emma Chodur, Baylee Renfro and Michele Figg each taking singles victories.
Chodur, the Western State Conference (WSC) singles champion and Player of the Year, kept her undefeated streak intact with a victory (6-3, 6-4) from the No. 1 position. Her postseason singles win improves the freshman's season mark to 20-0 vs. community college competition.
COC sophomore Baylee Renfro took a point in the No. 2 singles match with a convincing result (6-1, 6-0).
Michele Figg also won a singles point for the Cougars in the No. 6 spot (6-4, 6-1).
No. 5 singles player Olivia Snyder had her match halted in the third set after COC had secured the team victory. Breana Lemos at No. 3 and Lauren Neal at No. 4 both lost their singles matches.
In doubles play it was Chodur/Renfro playing to an 8-6 victory. The duo, which won the WSC Doubles Championship earlier in the week, now claim a 17-3 doubles record for the season with a streak of 17 straight wins.
Figg/Snyder also joined forces for an 8-6 win in the No. 3 doubles match.
Canyons will next face a familiar foe in conference rival and No. 1 seed L.A. Mission College at 2 p.m. Tuesday April 14, in Sylmar.
LAMC, the Western State Conference team champions, twice defeated Canyons during the regular season.
