Canyons Sinks Santa Monica 5-4, Moves Win Streak to Four

College of the Canyons moved its conference win streak to four matches with a 5-4 victory over visiting Santa Monica College at the Cougar Courts on Friday.

Canyons (9-4, 8-3) has now notched back-to-back single-point victories after also defeating  host Glendale College by a 5-4 margin on Thursday.

Santa Monica (3-9, 2-8) lost for the fifth straight contest despite taking points in three singles matches. 

The Cougars took a tight game in the No. 1 doubles matchup as Emma Chodur and Baylee Renfro combined forces for the duo's 10th straight win. The victory, which came by a 9-8 (3) final result, was the tightest of the season for Chodur/Renfro, who now boast a 10-3 overall record. 

That early point, combined with the 8-5 win from COC's No. 2 doubles pairing of Lauren Neal/Breana Lemos proved to be the difference in sinking the Corsairs.

In singles competition No. 1 Chodur added another win to her unbeaten record and now sits at 13-0 on the year. 

Renfro followed suit at No. 2 and is now .500 over her last four matches and 5-8 on the year.

Neal at No. 4 also won to get back on track after seeing her five-match win streak briefly halted the day before. She now sits at 6-5 on the season.

The Cougars continue to win but remain third in the Western State Conference (WSC) standings. Undefeated L.A. Mission (16-0, 10-0) is the conference leader with Santa Barbara City College (10-2, 6-2) slightly ahead of the Cougars in second place while having played three fewer conference matches.

Canyons and Santa Monica will run it back at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 17, in a road match for the Cougars.
